How to Convert Image Formats
What This Tool Does
The Image Format Converter transforms images between PNG, JPG and WebP using the browser's native Canvas API. Drop a .png and get a .jpg, drop a .bmp and get a .webp — the conversion happens locally with no file upload, no server, and no third-party image library to install.
Why Convert Between Formats?
Each image format has different strengths. PNG preserves every pixel with lossless compression but produces larger files, making it ideal for graphics with sharp edges (logos, UI elements, screenshots). JPG achieves much smaller file sizes with lossy compression, which works well for photographs but introduces artifacts around text and sharp lines. WebP delivers both lossy and lossless modes with better compression than either PNG or JPG, and modern browsers support it universally — but some older CMS platforms and email clients still require JPG or PNG.
Converting between these formats lets you serve the smallest possible image for each context: WebP for modern web pages, JPG for email templates and legacy systems, PNG for when lossless matters more than file size.
How to Use
- Drop your image onto the upload zone (PNG, JPG, WebP or BMP).
- Choose the output format: PNG (lossless), JPEG (smallest, lossy), or WebP (modern, good balance).
- For JPEG and WebP, adjust the quality slider — 90 is a good default that balances size and visual quality. Higher values produce larger files with less visible compression artifacts.
- Click Convert, then download the converted image.
Quality and Transparency Notes
PNG preserves alpha transparency and is always lossless. JPEG does not support transparency — transparent pixels become white (or black on some engines). If your PNG has transparency and you convert to JPEG, the transparent areas will be filled with a solid color. WebP supports both lossy and lossless modes as well as alpha transparency.
Privacy
All conversion uses the browser's built-in Canvas API. Your image is decoded, drawn to an off-screen canvas, and re-encoded — all within your browser. No data is transmitted or stored remotely.
❓ Preguntas frecuentes
Does JPEG conversion preserve transparency?
No. JPEG does not support alpha transparency. Transparent pixels in your source image will be filled with a solid background (typically white). Use PNG or WebP if you need transparency.
What quality should I choose for JPEG?
90 is a good default for most use cases. For web thumbnails where smaller file size matters more, 75-80 is acceptable. For archival or print, use 95-100.
Is WebP better than JPEG?
For web use, yes — WebP typically produces 25-35% smaller files at equivalent visual quality. However, some older email clients and CMS platforms do not support WebP, so JPEG remains the safe fallback.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion happens in your browser via the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.
