How to Convert PDF to Images
What This Tool Does
The PDF to Image Converter renders each page of a PDF as a separate image (PNG or JPG) using pdf.js, Mozilla's open-source PDF rendering engine. The rendering happens entirely in your browser โ the PDF is parsed and drawn to a canvas in a Web Worker, then exported as image files.
Common Use Cases
- Thumbnails: generate page thumbnails for a document preview gallery on a website.
- Social media sharing: convert PDF slides or charts to shareable images on platforms that only accept image formats.
- Presentations: extract individual pages as images for embedding in slides or documents.
- Legal and financial documents: capture specific pages as evidence or reference images without installing desktop PDF software.
- Accessibility: convert text-heavy PDFs to images for OCR processing or visual reference.
Resolution and Quality
The scale option controls rendering resolution: 1x renders at the PDF's native DPI (typically 72 DPI), 2x produces retina-quality images suitable for web display, and 3x produces print-quality images. Higher scales produce sharper images but larger files and longer processing time.
For web thumbnails, 1.5x or 2x is sufficient. For print reference, use 3x. For OCR preprocessing, 2x is the sweet spot โ higher resolution improves OCR accuracy but dramatically increases processing time.
How to Use
- Drop your PDF file onto the upload zone (max 50MB).
- Choose output format: PNG (lossless, larger) or JPEG (lossy, smaller, no transparency).
- Choose resolution scale: 2x is recommended for most use cases.
- Click Convert. Each page is rendered as a separate image.
- Download the zip file containing all page images.
Privacy
PDF rendering uses pdf.js running in a Web Worker. Your PDF is parsed and rendered locally โ no file is uploaded to any server. Safe for confidential documents, contracts, and financial statements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which PDF library is used?
Mozilla pdf.js, the same engine that powers Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. It is the most mature open-source PDF rendering library for the web.
What resolution scale should I choose?
2x is recommended for most use cases โ it produces retina-quality images suitable for web display. Use 3x for print reference. 1x is sufficient for quick thumbnails.
Can I convert a single page only?
Currently the tool renders all pages. For single-page extraction, use the PDF Split tool first to extract the page, then convert that single-page PDF to an image.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. pdf.js renders the PDF in a Web Worker in your browser. Your document never leaves your device.
